From the Chair of the Board

A true State Theatre Company for all Western Australians

2011 was a milestone year for Black Swan State Theatre Company for several reasons. Not only did Black Swan celebrate its 20th birthday, we also moved in to our new home, the magnificent State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.

Performing in this state-of-the-art venue has enabled Artistic Director Kate Cherry to further create moments of theatrical magic; selling out our first three productions in the Heath Ledger Theatre.

As we embark on our 21st year, we can expect many more sell out seasons, as the State’s appetite increases for high quality theatre productions.

The Board of Black Swan is encouraged by the response of our subscribers, patrons, sponsors, government and private supporters, who have all embraced our new home and the vision to continue inspiring theatre creators and admirers in Western Australia. Our program is expanding and diversifying as rapidly as our economy, with productions and co-productions travelling across the state, country and even further abroad including 2011 performances in Albany, Mandurah, Geraldton, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and London.

Black Swan was proud to make theatre history in 2011 with the presentation of the first live broadcast of a mainstage Black Swan production. Audiences throughout Western Australia were able to tune in and enjoy an innovative look at a Shakespeare classic - A Midsummer Night's Dream. We look forward to many more live broadcasts and an ongoing relationship with remote and regional parts of the state, as we continue to embed theatre in the lives of all Western Australians through education, performance and innovation.

To our supporters, we sincerely thank you for your commitment to Black Swan as the leading theatre company in Western Australia. Every ticket you purchase or gift you contribute enables us to continue to cultivate young and creative talent, commission new Western Australian works, deliver contemporary classics and lay the foundations for the future of performing arts in Western Australia.
