Behind the Scenes
Exclusive interview with Kylie Farmer
Reading The Sapphires script, what is it that attracted you to the story?
I was drawn to the fact that the story is based on true events. I grew fond of the sisters’ relationships with (and between) each other as well as their pathway they each individually travel. The narrative of Indigenous female performers blazing a trail against adversity to chase their dreams was always going to strike a chord with me. This script also showcases some amazing elements of music, song and dance, thus making it a very fun story to tell/share.
What are you most looking forward to about working on The Sapphires?
Whenever I commence work on any production, I’m always excited about the team element and the ‘cast and crew’ package. It’s great to be working on a show presented by both Black Swan and Company B Belvoir. I’m really looking forward to sharing the stage with Jimi Bani and I’m also thrilled to be performing with Christine Anu & Casey Donovan. It’s going to be great to finally work with Director, Wesley Enoch, and it’ll be great having Kyle Morrison as Assistant Director. I’m very excited about the music element and having Peter Farnan as the Musical Director. To have Tim Chappel as our Costume Designer is amazing, and I can’t wait to run through the choreography with Tony Bartuccio. With all this talent involved, it’s going to be a ‘fabulicious’ production and no doubt a fantastic season and tour.
Have you gained any particular experiences or knowledge in your life or career that you feel will assist you in your role in The Sapphires?
Sure, life itself is a never-ending learning experience. I certainly have a few similarities with my character ‘Kay’ having experienced a few things she speaks of in the play. I also have younger sisters, so that will help with the family aspect of my character and the sisterly relationships on stage.
So far, what has been the most memorable moment in your career?
It’s hard to name just one - I’ve had great experiences both on stage and on set (for film & TV). I would have to say two things: playing the role of ‘Juliet’ to the masses, love in the air, outdoor theatre, great audiences and a wonderful cast of fellow thespians. My second most memorable moment is the ‘Welcome to Country’ for the 2006 Perth International Arts Festival. We showcased our culture in such a magical way, I was very honoured to co-direct the performance and also share the stage with my Grandmothers and Elders as well as 100+ performers. That night continues to live in the memories of all who attended – a very special occasion indeed!
