Black Swan’s Artistic Director, Kate Cherry nominated for 2009 Helpmann Award

On Monday, the 2009 nominations for the national Helpmann Awards included Black Swan’s Artistic Director, Kate Cherry for Best Direction of an Opera for her 2008 production of The Coronation of Poppea for Victorian Opera. The Coronation of Poppea has been nominated for a total of five Helpmann Awards including Best Opera, Best Male Performer in an Opera and Best Female Performer in an Opera.

The Helpmann Awards are annual national awards  to recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia's vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, dance and physical theatre, similar to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London.

Earlier this year, The Coronation of Poppea received a Green Room Award for Best Opera and was nominated for a total of eight Green Room Awards, including Best Direction of an Opera.

Kate Cherry has directed in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and her productions have toured every capital city in Australia. Kate Cherry’s next production with Black Swan State Theatre Company, Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, will open at the Playhouse Theatre in August.

The 2009 Helpmann Awards will be presented on Monday 27 July in Sydney.
