Frequently Asked Questions

pool (no water), 2009. Image by Gary Marsh. When and how do I audition?

Performers will be required to present two contrasting contemporary monologues (of your choice) of no more than 3 minutes each.

Designers will be seen in individual interviews and should bring along their portfolio or examples of their work.

We are looking for 4 performers, a sound designer, lighting designer, AV designer, set and costume designer and a Stage Manager to participate in 2010.

All performers who would like to be considered for an audition please forward your head shot and C.V. to chantelle@bsstc.com.au  by Friday 6th November. Auditions will be held from 12th – 14th November. Callbacks will occur on Wednesday 18th November. Please note due to the large number of applicants in previous years, not all performers will be offered an audition. To be eligible you must be 18 years of age by 31st December 2009.

All designers who would like to be considered for an Interview please forward your C.V. to chantelle@bsstc.com.au  by the Friday 6th November. Interviews will be held on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th November.

Are the HotBed Ensemble members waged?

Yes, all the Ensemble members are waged for rehearsal and performance periods during the year. HotBed Ensemble members will not be paid to participate in workshops and masterclasses.

What time commitment is required for the program?

The program will operate from February through September 2010.

The HotBed Ensemble is designed to fit around other commitments and projects you may have during the year, but you would need to be available for the two rehearsal and production periods.
At other times in the year we will maintain contact through workshops and masterclasses, though these will be negotiated with the group.

The 2010 rehearsal and production periods are 12th April – 30th May and 5th July – 22nd August.

Is the Hotbed program only for young artists under 26?

No. Although The HotBed Ensemble has a particular interest in supporting young artists, the program is not restricted to people under the age of 26. Black Swan State Theatre Company is keen to support emerging artists at any age.

Can I participate in The HotBed Ensemble more than once?

As the program is morphing and growing each year, participants from 2006 and 2007 will be able to audition, though participants from 2008 and 2009 will be ineligible. This is due to the fact that The HotBed Ensemble now pays professional wages to its artists, and we would like to support as many artists as possible in this way.

Which artists will be running the workshops and directing the productions?

We plan each year to offer a diverse range of workshops that are free and exclusive for The HotBed Ensemble. We invite artists who are working with the Company from each of the mainhouse productions to run either a workshop or conduct a Q & A with members. In addition we try to secure workshops with international and national artists who may be visiting Perth.

Is this a one-off initiative?

No. The HotBed Ensemble will re-audition at the end of each year - so if you don't get accepted this time, please re-audition.
