Black Swan Announces Cast Line Up for The Clean House

Black Swan State Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre Company Announce Full Cast for The Clean House

Black Swan State Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre Company are pleased to announce the full cast line-up for the Company’s next production, The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl. The cast will include Carol Burns, Vivienne Garrett, Sarah McNeill, Hugh Parker and Brooke Satchwell as Matilde, the maid who would rather be spending her time concocting the perfect joke than cleaning her employer’s house.

The full line-up for The Clean House was finalised this week, with the role of Matilde being recast after Pia Miranda made the difficult decision to withdraw. Pia gave birth to a baby girl, Lily, in late March, and withdrew from the role due to the conflicting demands that she would have been facing having a newborn baby while committing to an intense rehearsal period and performing the play in two different capital cities.

Kate Cherry, Black Swan State Theatre Company’s Artistic Director said, “I am disappointed at losing Pia, but knowing first-hand the demands one’s first baby places on a new mother, I completely understand and support Pia’s decision. I wish her and her baby daughter all the best for these critical first months which are so precious for both mother and child. I look forward to working with Brooke, who I have wanted to collaborate with for a long time. I admire her adventurous spirit and sense of humour and think she will bring a great sense of fun to the role of Matilde.”

The cast will be portraying the following characters:

Brooke Satchwell: Matilde – A young Brazilian who moved to the U.S. after her parents, the funniest couple in Brazil, literally died laughing. She works as a live-in maid for Lane, but would rather be spending her time concocting the perfect joke.
Brooke has appeared on stage, TV and film and is best known for her roles in Neighbours, White Collar Blue and Canal Road.

Sarah McNeill: Lane – A successful doctor who values order in every aspect of her life.
Sarah is a Perth based actor and arts editor. She most recently appeared in The Swimming Club for Black Swan.

Carol Burns: Virginia – Lane’s sister, who thrives on cleaning and secretly takes over Matilde’s maid’s duties, giving Matilde time to craft jokes.
Carol’s extensive acting credits span theatre, film and television. She is best known for her performance as Frankie Doyle in Prisoner, and has appeared regularly for Queensland Theatre Company.

Hugh Parker: Charles – Lane’s husband, a surgeon.
Hugh is a British-born actor who has appeared in many British TV productions including EastEnders, Monarch of the Glen and Jonathan Creek. He relocated to the Gold Coast in 2008 and has since worked in TV and performed for Queensland Theatre Company in 25 Down.

Vivienne Garrett: Ana – One of Charles’ cancer-stricken patients, with whom Charles falls in love.
Vivienne is a Perth based actor and director with a long list of acting credits on stages across Australia as well as in film and television. She most recently appeared for Black Swan in Life x 3.

Rehearsals for The Clean House start in Perth on April 27. The play previews at the Playhouse Theatre from 29 May, with the season running until 19 June. The Clean House will be performing at Brisbane’s Cremorne Theatre from 28 June to 31 July 2010.
