The HotBed Ensemble in Past Years
The HotBed Ensemble has enjoyed critical and popular success since its inception in 2006. It has produced classic texts, contemporary work and new plays; in 2006 it presented Falling Petals and Woyzeck. 2007 saw The HotBed stage the acclaimed play The Laramie Project (Perth season and regional tour), and 2008 produced the award winning The Caucasian Chalk Circle and the World Premiere of Portraits of Modern Evil.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle was awarded the industry award for Best Director (Adam Mitchell) and Best Newcomer (Amanda Woodhams) at the 2008 Equity Guild Awards.
The HotBed Ensemble's workshop program has seen the group introduced to artists from the Royal Shakespeare Company, Song of the Goat (Poland), National Theatre of Scotland, Yohangza Theatre Company (Korea), Back to Back and Propeller Theatre Company (U.K.). They have also participated in workshops and master classes with local and national artists who have been working within the company such as Michael Kantor (Malthouse Theatre), Max Gillies and Zoe Atkinson.
In addition to skills development and networking opportunities more than a third of our HotBed artists have gone on to work in our mainstage program, which is one of the core objectives for the ensemble.
